I am so excited to introduce you to the Tall Tale quilt pattern today and I just wanted to share a little more with you about the quilt pattern itself.
Tall Tale Design
When sketching out this design I took inspiration from the Folklore Stitches Studio logo.
Our logo and this quilt were inspired by the act of telling stories and tall tales to a group, where there is a story teller in the centre with groups of individuals surrounding them.
When choosing the name for the quilt I went with Tall Tale, as the definition is "a story that is difficult to believe" and in a few ways I feel this represents the quilt itself as:
- This quilt looks more complex than it is, and the blocks come together incredibly quickly.
- With just a 180 degree twist of some of the blocks this quilt looks completely different. This is especially effective on the 2 colour versions. It is amazing how different you can make the quilt look with next to no effort.
The Quilt
The quilt itself is designed using just one block and sashing, with the block being an ideal candidate for chain piecing to speed up the piecing process even further. We then use the different orientations of the blocks to create the appearance of a medallion style quilt.
The block has been designed to be very versatile and changing the orientation of a few of the blocks can create a completely different looking quilt. Why not lay out your blocks before piecing and play with the orientation before you sew the quilt top together?
The piecing is straight forward so ideal for a beginner, as well as those with a little more experience.
There are four quilt sizes, with these being baby (43" x 43"), twin (72" x 96" ), small throw (58" x 58") and large throw (77" x 77"). With instructions to make all sizes in either a multi colour way or a two colour way.

Fabric
For the cover sample we have used a blue ombre colour palette which fades out to the corners, and then works its way back into the centre.
All solid colours used for the quilt top are Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Solids range (purchased from The Solent Quilter):
- Creme de la Creme
- Nocturnal
- Northern Waters
- Crystalline
- Ocean Fog
- Mediterraneo
- Ocean Waves
However this quilt will look just as fabulous using bright colours and / or prints. Or why not try making it with just 2 colours? This can create a very striking effect.
